The Re-Building CampOur Intention: To bring grassroots support to the effort of re-building the villages in the form of a building camp. This camp will have trained expert leadership working with volunteers alongside the local Berber community, with the intention of mutual learning and support.
What does this look like? We will set up specific starting dates to facilitate group building and good site orientation. Volunteers are expected to stay a minimum of two weeks. Volunteers will work in groups of three to five with home owners, local builders and our team leaders. Our work will be influenced by the progress of the construction, availability of materials and weather conditions. We will also have break-out sessions on natural building topics. Local Berber builders will provide information on building techniques in order to support the learning process of participants. Participants will learn about aspects of design, earth-building techniques, climate specific solutions, sustainable systems, permaculture, site selection, and other topics by request. The schedule will be generated on an as needed basis determined by the local community needs. Other activities can include: participation in local cultural events, language practice (French and Arabic) games, music. Guided trips into the desert will be available at extra cost. The local people do speak some English.

What is expected from volunteers? The opportunity is to have an extraordinary adventure in learning, while contributing to a Moroccan community in great need. In a camp situation we all need to practice respect for each other and respect for the local community. That means we will have to do without some of the comforts that we are used to at home. We will live in large shared Berber tents housing up to fifty people per tent. The option to bring your own tent is, of course, available. The cultural environment will expect a responsible code of dress and behavior. We will develop group agreements which we all support. Good personal leadership skills include open communication, good listening, supporting each other, no gossip, taking responsibility , self motivation and integrity. We expect full participation and adherence to group agreements.
Useful skills: French or Arabic language, construction experience, natural building experience, permaculture design, alternative technologies, conflict resolution, group leadership skills, communication skills, fund-raising skills.
How does the money work? Volunteers will pay a fee to register for the camp. This fee includes paying for the following:
- food, shelter and infrastructure
- project management and instruction
- a set contribution to the building fund (one house in Morocco costs 5000 Euros)
It does not include travel or field trips.
When do we go? Dates and time frames are still being worked out. We intend to be in Morocco from October to December.
